No Mess Spin Art
(Borrowed from Jill Reese)

Materials Needed:

One old record player (a.k.a. "phonograph " or "turn table")
A set of chubby markers
Paper plates, with small slit or hole punched in center

What To Do:

This is a great project for kids of all ages. But toddlers and young preschoolers love it because they can do it "just like the big kids".

Plug in the phonograph, turn it on so that the turntable begins revolving, place a paper plate on the turntable so that the spindle of the turntable goes through the hole or slit in the center of the paper plate. (Your plate should now be turning like a record.)

Now, turn a child loose with the markers! Show them that if they place the tip of the marker against the spinning paper plate a design will be created. They can experiment with combining different colors on each plate, varying the kind of squiggles and jots they apply and so on.

They love this! And older kids will join it too, putting more thought and experimentation into their efforts.
