1 cup Flour
1 cup
cool water
3 cups
boiling water
Food coloring.
What To Do:
Mix the
flour and cool water in a cooking pot. Gradually pour in the boiling
hot water. Place on stove, and continue to stir constantly until it
comes to a boil. Remove from heat. Stir in food coloring, and allow
to cool. (If you would like to have multiple colors, separate the mix
into different bowls before adding colors!)
Can be
stored for one or two days in the refrigerator.
Play:
This
"paint" is totally edible and therefore PERFECT for
toddlers to finger paint with! Be aware however that food coloring can
potentially stain. So dress appropriately!
Simply
prepare pudding according to directions. Chocolate pudding works
great for this activity, but you can use other types and add food
coloring if desired.
Some
people turn the child loose on a clean table or high chair tray,
while others provide a large sheet of paper. Wax paper could be used
also, or a clean cookie sheet.
Have your
camera ready for this one.
Play:
Paint!
Eat! Discuss! Photograph!
Proceed directly to tub -- do
not pass GO, do not collect any messy fingerprints on walls, furniture,
priceless heirlooms, etc.
Rainbow Stew Finger
Paint
(borrowed
from Teacher Annie)
Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
12 cups water
1 &
1/2 boxes of cornstarch
Various
food colors
What To Do:
Mix sugar
and water in saucepan. Heat on low and slowly mix in
cornstarch. Continue stirring until well mixed -- make take a while!
Cool in separate bowls and add a different color to each one.
Play:
You can
put the bowls and either:
provide
children with their own shallow bowl and allow them to mix colors
with their hands, or ...
substitutes
a Ziploc back for a bowl (zip it for the child), and let them watch
the colors ooze and blend, or...
encourage
children to finger paint with the colors, dipping fingers in various
colors as needed.
Remember
to provide smocks or old clothes if concerned about staining. (May
also want to cover the table!)
Ask
children what they notice, how it feels, what happened when they
added one color to another, etc. (Be sure to allow quiet time to just experience too!)
