Old
Turtle
Written by Douglas Wood. Illustrated by Cheng-Khee
Chee. Published by Pfeifer-Hamilton.
All the things upon the earth voice their
opinion about what God is like, based on their own narrow experience
and perspective. Then they fall to quarrelling, until Old Turtle
sets them straight -- that God is like all these things, and is in
all these things. This classic book is also a poignant
exploration of the perils assailing our world as human kind rises to
power without awareness of the divinity within all things. Total
destruction threatens as the humans take action guided only by
self-will and selfish interest.
All
I See Is Part Of Me
Written by Chara M. Curtis.
Illustrated by Cynthia Aldrich.
Cosmic consciousness for children. Goes beyond
"God is in everything", to point out the divine light
within the child, that it is the "real" self, and that this
same real self is in all things. 48 pages
hardcover edition, reprint.

Finding
The Greenstone
Written by Alice Walker.
Illustrated by Catherine Deeter.
Published by Harcourt Brace &
Company
A young boy loses his special green stone and
envies everyone else who has one. Metaphorical approach to teaching
that love/the heart is what gives life its luster -- and that only we
ourselves can take it away from us, through spiteful thoughts and
petty deeds. But that we can get it back again through loving acts
and kind reflections.
The
Hundredth Name
Written by Shulamith Levy Oppenheim.
Illustrated by Michael Hays.
"Prayer, Salah, has the greatest power. It
is a gift we must all use, for Allah is good. He listens. He understands..."
So speaks Salah's father in this touching
book about a boy who loves his camel so much that he prays for God to
reveal to the camel his secret name (the hundredth name of God), so
that the camel may be uplifted with inner wisdom -- this, Salah is
sure, will lift the spirits of his sad camel and restore his dignity
before humankind. Beautiful illustrations and nice textual details
about rural Egyptian life of an earlier era. A bit wordy at
times, for the attention span of young children, but can be paraphrased
where needed.

George And The Dragon

Schart Hyman.
Hodges' text will evoke renewed affection for

images of the dragons and fairy folk of old. This gorgeous book

Where
Does God Live?
Written by Holly Bea. Illustrated by Kim Howard.
Published by Starseed Press, an imprint of H.J. Kramer
Addresses a question that young children
themselves passionately want to know about, and offers an answer that most children find deeply satisfying: that
God is in everything and everyone of us, and that God is most
clearly expressing through us when we are showing love for one
another, but, is still there with us, even when we're not so
loving -- loving us, until the conflict passes.
Beautiful text and pictures.
World
Religions --
The great faiths explored & explained
Written by John Bowker. A DK Publishing book
Beautiful full-color imagery splashed across
every page -- making a typically abstract subject much more concrete
and approachable. Illustrations include symbols, religious art,
portraits and statues of the great spiritual teachers, and more.
Gives a synopsis of each major faith.
Muhammad
by Demi
In this beautiful and respectful picture
book biography, Demi introduces the reader to Muhammad, founding
prophet of Islam. Born in Mecca in the year 570,
Muhammad is reputed to have grown into a sensitive and thoughtful
man who believed deeply in the worship of one true god.
In his fortieth year, Muhammad experienced a revelation from the
angel Gabriel that he, Muhammad, was the messenger of God. Over the
next twenty-three years, he received many such revelations, all of
which were written down by
scribes at the time of revelation to become the Koran, the sacred
scripture of Islam, a religion that is practiced by nearly
one-quarter of the world's population and holds as its most sacred
tenet that there is no god but God.
This book forms a useful cornerstone for
discussion about Islam, spiritual tolerance, the distortions of
religious extremists, and current trends and events within world
politics. 49 pages. Reading level, ages
9-12. |
