How Do We
Create A Belief
In
Something Greater Than Ourselves...
(if we
don't already have one)?
This
is a question many at the threshold of a spiritual life have asked.
One thing for sure is: we can't force it. We can't create
a delusion that something is there, and then simply live in that
delusion. Even if it works for a while, our unconscious fear -- our
suppressed knowledge that we are but pretending -- will eat at us.
What
we can
do, is experiment. We can say: "What if?" We can "act
as if" there is something there, listening and responding to our
requests for help and guidance, and see what happens. Our
earthly-oriented, human animal self must become rationally convinced
-- must literally "see with its own eyes" -- that a
spiritual approach is solid and dependable.
We
must live face to face with our doubts, rather than deny them. We
must acknowledge our wholeness -- the parts that fear and the parts
that believe. We must be able to shrug our shoulders and say:
"Part of me fears, but I know that when I put my faith in that
greater power, when I earnestly turn to it and ask for guidance and
open to it coming to me -- something comes. So, whatever is
happening, whatever is really going on, I know that this works for me."
Over
time we will simply see that the results are far greater than when we
depended on just the personality self, acting alone on its own power.
(Although
paradoxically, calling upon the larger Self
is
one
of its powers, albeit an often forgotten one.)
