A Very Merry Unbirthday Camp!

A Very Merry Un-Birthday to you!

Sick & tired of crappy birthdays?  Visit the  Un-Birthday Camp for tea & sympathy.  Laugh!  Hug! Tell the DorMouse your troubles.

Write your woes in the Crappy Birthday Album & let the Hookah Smoking Caterpillar poke your aura & share advice.

Iced Tea Time among shaded blossoms from 2-4 p.m.

Located on the 2007 Playa at Boreal and 7:30.

(Note:  due to the new regulations being enforced at the burn this year, by the local health department, we will not be able to provide food or beverages to the general public, as we don't have a food service license.    Yet another reason to burn The Man in effigy.  However, we can still share tea with friends who stop by to visit.)

Interested in joining or helping out
with the Very Merry Un-Birthday Camp?

We are looking for a few folks who resonate with the theme and who would like to help out a couple hours a day by hanging out at camp and welcoming folks in for a bit of fun in the shade.   If you would like to do some amateur face painting or other goofy fun stuff, give hugs, and get people to write their tale in the Crappy Birthday album, drop us a line,   We'd love to have your help!

All heart felt efforts welcomed.   No perfectionism required.

If you want to also pitch a tent with us, you should know a few things:

  1. We have a very limited amount of space available for additional campers, so better ask quick if you want a spot.   Otherwise, fo'get about it.

  2. We have no generator.  Let me say that again: NO GENERATOR.  So don't show up with your hairdryer asking where to plug in.   And don't forget to bring your battery or solar powered flashlights and lanterns.  Along with your own tent, bedding, etc.   Read the official Burning Man Survival Guide for tips on what else to bring.

  3. Sorry but we ain't cookin' for you, so plan to bring your own food.  And your own WATER.

  4. We don't supply alcohol or any other kind of intoxicants for you.    For starters, we can't afford it.

  5. We run a moop free camp.   Please plan ahead to help us keep it that way.

  6. We run a kid friendly camp!  So ...yeah...  get your freak on somewhere else when you gotta go there.  Enjoy!   But enjoy in front of people over 18.

  7. We like things nice and quiet from 2 am until 8 am.   Or as much so as the general noise at the Playa will allow.   So please camp with someone else if you want to party all night.   Or camp with us and do your all night partying somewhere else.  Thanks!

What we do have is:

an open heart

some room to share

and a great spot on the Playa

What we're into:

art

environment - animals - kids - future

making positive change

poking fun at normalcy (i.e. "how it's supposed to be")

accepting ourselves as we are -- right here, right now

Ah yes the birthday party..  Ever since earliest childhood it has loomed as that one special day we could count on to feel that we were truly special, truly doted on
by the people that love us.

When all our friends and relations would gather round and shower us with gifts and good wishes.

That moment when we can be Mommy, or Daddy's,
 little Princess.  Or Prince.

When they drop everything
just to sing us a merry song
and watch us blow out the freakin' candles.

It's lovely.

And yet what happens all too often?

Friends forget us.

 Plans go awry.

Something really sucky happens.

In short, our birthday STINKS!!

And if you're particularly unlucky, a whole lot of your birthdays suck.

 And life in general seems
 a whole lot less kind...

"Well screw that!"

Oh sure... we could mope and whine,  get bitter, nasty.

Chase after material things and people ...

We could harden our hearts and say

we don't really need 'em anyhow!

Or...

We could

go to Burning Man

and party 'til we're purple!

Okay wait... that's a Spongebob thing...

(the partying 'til purple part)

But the point is it's never to late to have some childlike fun,

or to find people willing to make time for it!

.

...And in the long run,

hanging on to that compassionate, fun-loving kid inside

is what powers us to care about other people.

About animals.  The environment....

And so we pick ourselves up off the floor and say, "Screw the Mean People!"   And bitter circumstances.   And the shitty stuff that goes on in the world.   We can decide not to let it hold us back, make us give up -- on love, laughter, trust, and joy.

But how do we move on from there?

Maybe it's as simple as believing we are good, and deserve good.  That there is a loving presence just waiting to lend a hand...

Or... maybe it's about banding together with others of our kind
to fend off the status quo "normalcy".   To give a hug, a bit of encouragement.

Or maybe it's about forgiving -- ourselves... others.. the universe.   Accepting that when we fall down we may have a bit more to learn.

But maybe... just maybe...

it's also about not taking it all so seriously.

Whatever the answer is..

we're pretty sure

that being silly is a step in the right direction.

So if you're out at Black Rock City to see The Man burn,

don't be shy, just stop on by

and let us wish you...

A Very Merry Un-Birthday... to you!

How the Un-Birthday Camp Idea Started

The idea for our camp arose from the fact that this last year on my daughter's 16th birthday my mother was in the hospital, dying of cancer.  It should have been a very special and happy day of celebration.  Instead we had no party and a lot of heart ache.  So we decided to have an "un-birthday" party (camp) to share with people at Burning Man.

Stop on by and say hi, and celebrate the fact that life may deal us some crappy hands, but that we don't have to let it run us.   After all, it's never too late to have a very merry un-birthday!
