Annie's Recommended Reading....

by Annie Castle Deckert, M. Ed. Psych.

(For Parents and Caregivers of Infants/Toddlers/Two's)

The very basics:

Your One Year Old, Your Two Year Old, and the entire series (up to age 10) by Louise Bates Ames (Gessell Institute.) Very basic and essential information about child development. If you only read one book per year, it should be from this series. MUST READ!

How To Talk So Kids Will Listen,And Listen So Kids Will Talk, by Faber & Mazlisch. Also Siblings without Rivalry by the same authors. From these books you'll learn skills that will help you in your parenting or teaching for many years to come. MUST READ!

Positive Discipline: The First Three Years, by Jane Nelson, Cheryl Erwin, Roslyn Duffy. The best information available in the area of limit setting. MUST READ! Also: Positive Discipline For Preschoolers by the same authors.

Some other favorites:

Your Child's Growing Mind, by Jane Healy. Excellant explanation of how the brain develops, and how early experiences impact this development.

Raising Your Spirited Child, by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka. Not just for parents fo "difficult children, this book contains insights for all adults into the personal styles and needs of all children. If you do have a "challenging child" in your life, or if you were one yourself, you'll find it especially helpful. Also very insightful regarding shy, introverted children and their needs.

And anything by these authors will be helpful, sensible, and readable:

    • T. Berry Brazelton (Touchpoints, etc.)

    • Thomas Armstrong (In Their Own Way, etc.)

    • Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers Talks to Parents, etc.)

    • Cynthia Whitham (How to Win the Whining Wars, etc.)

    • Bettie B. Youngs (Your Child's Self-Esteem, etc.)

    • Frank and Theresa Caplan (The Early Childhood Years, etc.)

    • David Elkind (The Hurried Child, etc.)

    • Cynthia Ulrich Tobias (The Way They Learn, etc.)

    • (This is just a starting point,
and not a comprehensive list! -- Annie)
